The valley takes its name from nine mills that once stood along the Vydrica stream. They remained in use until the second half of the 19th century, after which their buildings gradually found new purposes. Today, Mlynská dolina is the name of both the neighbourhood and the road along the eastern edge of Karlova Ves. At its southern end, traffic connects to Lanfranconi Bridge and the main routes across Bratislava.

The area is closely tied to student and academic life. It is home to the Slovak University of Technology's faculties of electrical engineering and informatics, and informatics and information technologies, as well as Comenius University's faculties of natural sciences, and mathematics, physics and informatics.
Recognisable landmarks include the Slovak Television tower and Slávičie údolie cemetery nearby. Mlynská dolina is not a conventional tourist district. It is a practical, greener and well-known part of the city used every day by students, employees, visitors and people continuing towards the centre.
